The current Prime Minister of Ireland, the Christian Democrat Leo Varadkar, will take turns with centrist Micheál Martin in a government coalition that ends the four months of uncertainty in the republic, after the elections of February 8 that led to the historical victory - although insufficient - of Sinn Fein.

The Fine Gael and the Fianna Fáil, the two parties that have secularly exercised duopoly in Ireland, have agreed on the unusual coalition, which has been joined by the Green Party. Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald did not win enough support for a majority in Parliament of 160 MPs despite her electoral victory with 24% of the vote.

The agreement for a government coalition for the next five years has yet to be voted on among the militants of the three parties. If at least a third of the Green Party militants oppose it, the agreement would be blown up and open the doors to early elections. Eamon Ryan's Green Party has thus become the referee of the Irish puzzle.

In the midst of the coronavirus crisis, Leo Varadkar decided to provisionally continue in his position and to volunteer (as a doctor) offering information by telephone to his compatriots. Despite having been third with Fine Gael in the elections with 21% of the votes (the Irish punished him precisely for the cuts to public health and the housing problem), Varadkar has considerably improved his reputation for the response to the pandemic , which has claimed 1,706 victims in Ireland.

Under the atypical coalition agreement, the first 'taoiseach', however, would be Micheál Martin, leader of the Fianna Fáil, who achieved second place with 22% of the votes . Martin initially resigned a possible deal with Sinn Fein for "ethical reasons," given the Republican party's historical link to the IRA, despite the turnaround undertaken by Mary Lou McDonald when she took over from Gerry Adams two years ago.

The first objective of the new government would be the approval of an economic rescue package for the coronavirus estimated at 6.5 billion euros. The specter of an economic recession and the impact of Brexit will be the two major obstacles that the new coalition faces from the outset, which may also pave the way for a new relationship with Northern Ireland (with the centenary of the "partition" just around the corner in 2021 and public opinion increasingly favorable to an island unification referendum).
