It is primarily to protect the sensitive reindeer herds during calving in the spring that the county administrative board has granted shelter for bear. In recent years, eleven bears have been shot during the shelter in Västerbotten, while shootings in neighboring counties have been significantly higher. Three years ago, the scenario of high shooting during the protection hunt was similar in Norrbotten and then the county administrative board decided to suspend the license hunt.

- Yes, we fear it will be like this in Västerbotten this year, says bear hunter Tobias Lundmark in Sorsele. There is nothing like massaging so many bears, moreover most bears are shot from a helicopter and I think the county administrative board has failed with its predator management, he says.

County Administrative Board: There is a risk

Michael Schneider, who is the predator responsible at the county administrative board, says it was necessary to almost triple the shooting during the hunting of bear. He believes that the bear strain in Västerbotten is so strong that it can withstand the increased hunting.

But how do you see the hunters' concern that the August and September licensing itself is in danger?

- Yes, unfortunately it can be so, we do not know yet before we compiled the inventories how it will be but there is a risk that there will be no licensing hunt, says Michael Schneider.
