The Atlanta riots broke out late Saturday. The 27-year-old man was killed outside the fast-food restaurant in connection with a police check.

The restaurant staff had called the police when the 27-year-old had fallen asleep in his car, blocking the way for other customers.

Stole electric shock weapons

The shooting was captured on film, both by the restaurant's security cameras but also by at least one private person. The films show how the 27-year-old wrestles with the two police officers, gets hold of the one's electric shock weapon and then tries to get away.

The man disappears from the picture and then the sound is heard of shots being fired. One of the police officers hear shouting "I got him!" The film shows the 27-year-old lying on the ground. Another film shows how the 27-year-old aimed the electric shock weapon at the police before he was shot, reports CNN.

The chief of police resigns

Earlier on Saturday, Erika Shields, Atlanta Police Chief, announced that she is leaving.

"I do not think this was a justified use of deadly force and have demanded that the policeman be fired immediately," Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said earlier on Saturday.

The policeman was allowed to go with immediate effect after the shooting.

The lawyers for the 27-year-old's family, including his four children, say the police had other options when they tried to arrest him.

- If the policeman had been more empathetic and less afraid, we would not have a dead client.
