Unidas Podemos is an increasingly bunkerizado and vertical political party . Proof of this are the latest additions to the Executive of the purple formation , endorsed last Saturday by the state Citizen Council. Jaume Asens, Julio Rodríguez, Manu Levín, Teresa Arévalo, Ángela Rodríguez and Isa Serra join the leadership of Unidas Podemos, which already has 20 positions plus that of Secretary General Pablo Iglesias. Of the 17 members who formed the previous outgoing Executive, Irene Montero, Juanma del Olmo, Ione Belarra, Pablo Echenique, Alberto Rodríguez, Ana Marcello, Noelia Vera, Idoia Villanueva, Nacho Álvarez, Sofía Castañón, Txema Guijarro, Pablo Fernández and Pilar repeat. Among the new (old) faces, there are some very powerful. For example, Julio Rodríguez's. The former Chief of Defense Staff (Jemad) was appointed chief of staff of Pablo Iglesias' vice-presidency for Social Rights. Now, he joins the Podemos Executive -Coordination Council- as head of Peace and Security.
The Jemad of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero between 2008 and 2011 stopped flying the skies at the age of 67 (he was an aviation general) to go down to earth and follow in the footsteps of Pablo Iglesias. Although some voices pointed out that Julito el Rojo , as his military comrades called him, wanted to land in politics at the hands of the PSOE, he has always denied it. However, its proximity to Zapatero, Rubalcaba and Carme Chacón was symptomatic. This was not the case with Sánchez's environment and it was then that Iglesias recruited the former Jemad in a marketing strategy.
The leader of Podemos gave an effect blow and incorporated a recognized face among his ranks. His goal was to demonstrate that his party had "serious" people. "Iglesias wanted to present an innovative proposal, but one that had experienced and managing people who did not give the impression that they were a group of kids and that is why he incorporated Julio," says Luca Costantini, author of Aqui Mando Yo: Historia intima de We can (The Sphere of Books). Julito el Rojo has been gaining more and more power in the Iglesias formation, rewards loyalty to the leader and for this reason Julio has always accompanied him. Despite this, Rodríguez has a reserved character and is not very talkative. He has no reputation for over-cultivating dialogue and is lonely . Julio is married in second nuptials to Paqui Sánchez, with whom he has a 15-year-old daughter. He has two children from a previous marriage who have made him a grandfather.
On the other hand, Manu Levín is a man in the shade. The creator of the most powerful speeches of Unidas Podemos does not usually appear in the photos and prefers the background. Iglesias has included it in his thanks on some occasions, noting that the best approaches and ideas come from "a bookworm" named Manu Levín. Coming from La Sexta, he is now responsible for the area of Podemos Speech.
Isa Serra joins the Executive assuming, together with Rafa Mayoral, the party's spokesperson. He belonged to the group of anti-capitalists and has ended up on Pablo's side. His partner is Juanma del Olmo, communication secretary and very close to Iglesias. Together they have had Adrián, their first child. Both Irene and Pablo showed their public support for Serra after the sentence for insulting and assaulting Municipal Police officers by trying to prevent an eviction.
Jaume Asens, in his day a reference lawyer for the anti-capitalists, very close to Ada Colau, with whom it is rumored that he had a relationship, will be secretary of Human Rights. The spokesperson for En Comú Podem in Congress is the key man for dialogue with Catalonia and a close friend of Pablo Iglesias. He is romantically related to Leticia Dolera. Angela Rodríguez 'Pam', Equality Advisor, will be Secretary of LGTBI Rights. Teresa Arévalo also joins the Executive. Montero's trusted person, is the deputy chief of staff of the minister.
In short, a tailor-made party, without an iota of dissent. It is very revealing that Gloria Elizo, third vice president of Congress and secretary of Policies against Corruption, does not renew his position in the Executive. Elizo has distanced himself from some internal positions and showed his "discontent" with Dina Bousselham's media, La Última Hora.
