A 48-year-old detainee committed suicide by hanging himself with sheets in his cell in the Vesoul prison on the night of Thursday to Friday, we learned from the city's prosecutor's office. The body of the man was discovered by a supervisor during a round and he could not be resuscitated despite the intervention of help, said the public prosecutor of Vesoul, Emmanuel Dupic, during a press conference.

A letter to his family explaining his actions was found in his cell. The detainee had been presented Thursday in immediate appearance before the correctional court of Vesoul for acts of driving under the influence of alcohol, insults, degradations and death threats on person depositary of the public authority. He had already been convicted eight times for similar acts.

Depressed and psychologically fragile

He had asked for time to prepare his defense and had been placed in pre-trial detention in the remand center. The forties was incarcerated alone in his cell because of the Covid-19 epidemic, while the new detainees are generally placed with a cellmate during the first week, noted Mr. Dupic.

Depressed and psychologically fragile, this father of two had psychiatric treatment. The prison authorities had taken his condition into account by increasing the number of rounds to verify that he was well. No suicide had taken place in Vesoul prison for at least ten years.
