12 June 2020 The labor market dynamics measured in the first quarter of 2020 have been affected, starting from the last week of February, by the strong disturbances induced by the health emergency. Istat notes this.

In the first quarter of 2020, labor input, measured by hours worked,
recorded a sharp decrease both compared to the previous quarter (-7.5%) and
compared to the same period of last year (-7.7%).

These dynamics are consistent with the phase of exceptional fall in economic activity which, in the last quarter, was affected by the effects of the health crisis, with a decline in GDP of -5.3% in short-term terms.

On the labor supply side, in the first quarter of 2020 the number of people employed decreased in economic terms (-101 thousand, -0.4%), following the increase in permanent employees and the sharp drop in those term and independent.

The employment rate is 58.8%, down 0.2 points compared to the fourth quarter of 2019. In the most recent data of April 2020, net of seasonality, the effect of the Covid-19 emergency is more evident: the employed drop by 274 thousand units (-1.2%) compared to March 2020 and the employment rate drops to 57.9% (-0.7 points in a month).

In the first quarter 260 thousand inactive due to Covid 
In the first quarter of the year, the number of inactive people aged 15-64 increased by 290 thousand compared to the same quarter of 2019 (+ 2.2%) and of these for approximately 260 thousand the reason why no job search is due to the Covid health emergency. This is what emerges from the Istat data on the labor market referring to the first three months of the year, according to which, in the face of a decrease in family reasons and those waiting for the results of past job searches for a place, there is a strong increase who specifies, among other reasons, that of the health emergency. The total of inactive is 13 million 540 thousand.
