  • Brazil: Jair Bolsonaro rides a horse among thousands of people and ignores the coronavirus

Brazil overtook the United Kingdom and became this Thursday the second country with the highest number of deaths from Covid-19, reaching 41,828 deaths, with many regions of the country already immersed in a questioned de-escalation despite the still strong spread of the disease.

The Ministry of Health registered 909 deaths due to coronavirus in the last 24 hours and added 25,982 new cases, bringing the total balance of confirmed infections to 828,810.

Brazil, with some 210 million inhabitants, is positioned as the second country in the world in number of infected and dead, just behind the United States.

Despite the fact that the curve has not yet reached the peak, which could occur in the coming weeks, the vast majority of the 27 Brazilian states continue to stand firm with their de-escalation plans, criticized by the scientific community and applauded by far-right President Jair Bolsonaro. .

"This flexibility is quite risky at the moment, considering that we are in an uncontrolled moment of the pandemic in the country, with an increase in confirmed cases and deaths," says doctor Leonardo Weissmann, consultant to the Brazilian Society of Infectious Diseases (SBI). .

Since February 26, when the first case was officially registered, the coronavirus has already reached 80% of the municipalities in a Brazil that continues with an interim Minister of Health, General Eduardo Pazuello, with no experience in the area.

Pazuello took office in mid-May after Brazil lost two health ministers, both doctors, in less than a month because of their disagreements with Bolsonaro about managing the coronavirus crisis.

BOLSONARO CONTINUES WITH ITS DENIAL CAMPAIGN

On the eve, the far-right leader, who calls Covid-19 a "flu" and considers quarantining "a crime", again insinuated that the numbers of the disease are being manipulated with the aim of eroding the image of his Government.

For this reason, in his weekly transmission via social networks, the head of state invited his followers "to find a way to enter" public hospitals and record with their mobile phones to find out if they are saturated or not.

"Many have already done it, but more people have to do it to show if the beds are occupied or not, if the expenses are compatible or not. That helps," said the president.

This new initiative by the president comes days after the opposition and medical associations accused the government of an "information blackout" after omitting the total numbers of cases and deaths, which it had to include again in its bulletins after a ruling by the Supreme Court.

GREAT CITIES STOP BELIEVING IN ISOLATION

A study by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) of Brazil, the largest medical research center in Latin America, published this week showed that the inhabitants of the country's large cities began easing their isolation in late May, earlier than allowed by local authorities.

Based on GPS data and other indicators, scientists have seen in recent weeks an average increase of 20% in traffic jams in the metropolitan regions of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Recife, Manaus and Porto Alegre.

These cities are currently in full de-escalation despite the contagion and deaths continue to rise.

In Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, the liberation of street commerce and shopping malls, already effective with restrictions, has resulted in significant crowds at some points.

The state of Sao Paulo, which currently has almost 70% of ICU beds occupied, remains the epicenter of the pandemic in Brazil, with 10,368 deaths and 167,900 cases, followed by Rio de Janeiro, which accounts for 7,417 deaths and 77,784 infections. .

BRAZIL, FAR AWAY FROM THE HERD IMMUNITY

Following the example of other countries affected by the pandemic, Brazil has started seroprevalence studies at the national level to try to discover what percentage of the population has been in contact with the new coronavirus.

The second edition, produced between June 4 and 7, indicates that the number of people infected with the pathogen grew by 53% compared to the first phase of the survey, which dates from mid-May.

In the 83 cities studied in both rounds of the investigation, the proportion of the population with antibodies went from 1.7 to 2.6%, which shows that group immunity is far from being achieved.
