The latest nuclear submarine strategic cruiser "Prince Vladimir" has been accepted into the combat structure of the Russian Navy, the Ministry of Defense reports.

“On the Day of Russia, June 12, a ceremony was held at the Sevmash enterprise in Severodvinsk for the admission to the Navy of the latest strategic missile submarine cruiser Borey-A (955A) Prince Vladimir and the ascent to St. Petersburg’s naval flag, ”the agency said.

The head of the Navy, Admiral Nikolai Evmenov, led the ceremony of receiving the ship into the fleet. It was also attended by the Commander of the Northern Fleet Alexander Moiseev, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Oleg Ryazantsev, Acting Governor of the Arkhangelsk Region Alexander Tsybulsky, Mayor of Severodvinsk Igor Skubenko, President of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) Alexei Rakhmanov and CEO of Sevmash Mikhail Budnichenko.

During the ceremony, the head of the Navy drew attention to the fact that an unmatched cruiser joined the ranks of the fleet on Russian Day.

“This event underlines the status of the Russian Federation as a great maritime power with an ocean fleet. Strategic missile submarine cruiser “Prince Vladimir” embodied the advanced scientific thought of our scientists, shipbuilders, ”he said.

Recall that "Prince Vladimir" is the lead boat of the improved project 955A ("Borey-A") - nuclear submarines of the fourth generation. The ship was laid in 2012 in the presence of Vladimir Putin.

“Prince Vladimir” became the first ship of the improved project 955A “Borey-A” launched into the water. Along with the submarines of the project that are in service with the Navy (Yuri Dolgoruky, Alexander Nevsky, and Vladimir Monomakh), the cruiser Prince Vladimir was designed at the St. Petersburg Central Design Bureau MT Rubin and manufactured at the shipyards of PO Sevmash JSC Severodvinsk. The ship was launched in November 2017.

The main tests, including missile firing, the cruiser passed in 2019. In particular, in October, the Bulava, a sea-based ballistic missile, was first test-launched from a strategic missile carrier.

In mid-May 2020, "Prince Vladimir" began underwater tests, during which the acceptance commission checked the quality of the elimination of previously identified deficiencies and the efficiency of the ship.

In late May, the ship was officially handed over to the Navy. The act of acceptance of the ship on June 2 was signed by the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Admiral Nikolai Evmenov. The cruiser will perform tasks in the Northern Fleet.

Recall that this formation is responsible for the defense of the Arctic spaces from Murmansk to Chukotka, and the protection of the economic resources of the Arctic and the Northern Sea Route. Another major task of the Federation Council is to ensure nuclear deterrence of Western states.

Commenting on the replenishment in the ranks of the ships of the Navy, a retired military expert, Colonel Viktor Litovkin, pointed out the importance of this event in light of the strengthening of the combat readiness of the Russian nuclear deterrence forces.

“Prince Vladimir” is a serial project that has undergone improvement. Silent engines stand there, the boat is manoeuvrable, has the latest and perfect equipment, ”the expert said in an interview with RT.

He pointed out that the presence of such a technique makes "the probable enemy not to doubt that he will get what he deserves."

The editor-in-chief of the Arsenal of the Fatherland magazine, member of the expert council of the board of the Military-Industrial Commission of Russia Viktor Murakhovsky also drew attention to the fundamental novelty of the Prince Vladimir project.

“This is a completely new submarine. Past boats were built from the “Soviet backlog”. The new boat made it possible to more effectively use the capabilities of the hull, the noise of the boat during movement was reduced. It was equipped with modern on-board systems. Plus she got new torpedo tubes, ”said RT Murakhovsky.

He concluded that, taking into account the importance of naval weapons in the concept of nuclear deterrence, "one must understand that these boats are in demand in order to ensure the country's defense at the highest level."
