  • Analysis: Basque Country and Galicia, Vox's 'black hole' in the elections

Vox is launched to the electoral race in Galicia. Santiago Abascal has started the pre-campaign of the July 12 elections with an act in Mos (Pontevedra) in which he has clothed his candidates and in which he has launched what seems to be the main axis of the campaign . The Vox leader has claimed to have representation in the Galician Parliament in order to have Alberto Núñez Feijóo "watched" and tie him up short "so that he is not looking at leftist and nationalist policies as he has done in recent years."

Only a month left for the appointment with the ballot boxes and the coronavirus has markedly conditioned the plans of Vox, which had in mind a very personal campaign by Abascal and with a lot of presence from other of its national leaders to overcome the low prospects with time frame that the polls indicate, taking advantage of the pull of all of them and their vitola of the third national political force.

Now, with all the political and social focus monopolized by the coronavirus and the de-escalation, Vox finds itself with the need to urgently accelerate and go into the campaign for the Galician and Basque elections if it does not want to go badly wrong. And it is that, they are two of the three autonomies in which he had his worst results in the general elections.

In addition to this setback, in the case of Galicia, there are two other important issues. On the one hand, having completely unknown candidates. And, on the other, and the most important that explains all the other factors, is that Galicia is the autonomy of Spain where the PP is strongest. Feijóo not only has solid leadership, but also achieves a transversal vote that practically leaves the spaces that Citizens and Vox represent marginal.

Hence, Vox faces one of its great electoral challenges and has placed Feijóo as the center of its first messages. Abascal has appealed that on July 12 there is a "historic opportunity" to condition the PP leader in the Galician Parliament and that Vox has a "significant presence" that is sufficient to make him depend on his votes and have him "watched" . Only in this way, Abascal has pointed out, will he not look "at leftist and nationalist policies as he has done in recent years."

Against the "imposition" of Galician

Vox points out language policy as one of them. For this reason, it has placed as the first point of its decalogue of measures for Galicia the promise that Galician is not an "imposition" in educational or legal institutions. It proposes that said language is also not a "requirement" to enter the public service but rather a "merit". "Language should be a reason for unity, not division."

Vox wanted to wink at the workers vote by celebrating its first pre-campaign act in a polygon, in this case, that of Rebullón de Mos. List heads have participated in it: Ricardo Morado Fajardo (La Coruña), Sonia Tejeiro (Lugo), María Jesús Fernández (Orense) and Antonio Ramilo (Pontevedra).

Abascal's party has denounced the presence of a dozen "left-wing radicals" in the vicinity of the act who have uttered death threats against those present with the cry "This time you are going to the gutters." The training has announced that its legal services are going to file a complaint against the conveners and "against those who have allowed them to remain there."
