There have been hundreds of accidents involving electric scooter cities where companies rent out these vehicles. The worst is in the big cities.

- I think the Malmö residents want those who want to ride an electric scooter bike to do so, but it should be done in orderly form, says Andreas Schönström (S), municipal council responsible for traffic issues in Malmö.

Charges by landlord

During Friday, the traffic committee is expected to decide that companies that rent electric scooter bikes should apply for a permit and pay an annual fee of SEK 1,825 per vehicle to the municipality. In order for this to go through, the local statute statute must be changed and the municipal council and the county administrative board give their approval.

- I expect we will get through this. If not, we will proceed with legal action, says Andreas Schönström.

The new rules also apply to leasing other electric one-person vehicles, such as electric bicycles when they are "free-flowing mobility services". This means that the rental person picks up the vehicle in one place and leaves it anywhere within a specified area

19 new parking spaces

The City of Malmö also plans to build special parking spaces for electric scooter bikes at 19 locations in central Malmö. Before the corona pandemic, there were about 2,500 electric scooters for rent in Malmö.
