Operation Rimfrost is a so-called national special event within the police that started after a series of serious acts of violence in Malmö. The triggering factor was the murder of a 15-year-old boy outside a pizzeria on Möllevångstorget in November 2019.

Objective: reduce shooting

The effort was initially concentrated mainly on the police region of the South but later expanded to the police region Mitt with a focus on Stockholm and Uppsala, among others.

The operation has had four goals: To reduce the number of fires and blasts. To reduce the number of people involved in criminal networks. To increase the number of seizures of weapons and explosives components and to make the public feel safer.

- You have seized weapons, you have marked individuals who are more criminal than others and you have arrested several people, says SVT reporter Karin Fagerlund.

Small effects

A review of SVT's Agenda shows that the effort has had very small effects when it comes to reducing the number of fires and blasts. A comparison between the first half of 2020 and the last half of 2019 shows that they are just below the same level as before.

If you look at the number of fatalities, the figures are even darker. During the five months before Operation Rimfrost, 12 people were shot dead - during the five months of the operation, 25 people lost their lives in fatal shootings.

At Wednesday's press conference, the police will present an overall problem picture and report on the ongoing work on the deadly violence, and what direction the work will have when the national special event ends.
