11 June 2020 In the first quarter of 2020, a large economic downturn in exports is estimated for all geographical areas: above the national average for the North-east (-6.8%) and for the South and Islands (-5.4%) , more contained for the Center (-3.5%) and for the Northwest (-3.3%). Istat notes this.

In the same period, exports show a decrease on an annual basis higher than the national average for the North-East (-2.5%) and the North-West (-2.2%) and less wide for the Center (-1, 5%), while the South showed a slight increase in sales (+ 1.1%), a synthesis of the -1.3% drop for the South and + 7.5% growth for the Islands.

In the first three months of 2020, the trend decrease in exports affects more than half of the Italian regions and is wider for Valle d'Aosta (-21.4%), Basilicata (-17.2%) and Marche (-9 , 5%). Worth noting is the negative performance of Lombardy (-3.0%) which alone contributes 0.8 percentage points to the decrease on an annual basis of national exports. On the other hand, among the most dynamic export regions, in comparison with the first quarter of 2019, there are Molise (+ 57.0%), Liguria (+ 39.0%) and Sardinia (+ 12.2%).

In the period January-March 2020, the decrease in sales of machinery and equipment from Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, Piedmont and Veneto and of base metals and metal products from Lombardy contributes to the tendential decrease in national exports by 1.7 percentage points . On the other hand, the increase in sales of pharmaceutical, chemical-medicinal and botanical articles from Lombardy, Tuscany, Veneto and Marche contrasted the drop in exports by 1.6 percentage points.

In the first quarter of 2020, a negative pulse to the annual trend of national exports comes from sales of Lazio to the United States (-35.0%) and Lombardy to Germany (-8.2%), France (-7 , 0%) and Spain (-7.8%). In the provincial export analysis, the negative performances of Frosinone, Alessandria, Brescia, Reggio Emilia, Bergamo and Pesaro and Urbino are highlighted. The performances of Genoa, Arezzo and Rome were positive.

Auto, in April production collapsed by 98.4% on year
Record drop for the production of motor vehicles. In April, as a result of the forced closure of industrial activities, linked to the Covid-19 pandemic, the motor vehicle sector saw its production drop by 98.4% on an annual basis (corrected for calendar effects). According to Istat estimates in the first four months of the year, car production fell by 42.5% over the same period in 2019. Compared to March, the decline in production of motor vehicles was 100% (since seasonally adjusted).
