During this morning's press conference, in which the Palme inquiry presented what they had come up with and announced that the inquiry was closed, Prosecutor Krister Petersson presented a document authored by Håkan Ström who worked with the Palme inquiry from 1986 to 1992. Petersson suggested that the memorandum was what killed the police interest for Stig Engström, the so-called Skandiamannen.

- The decision, so to speak, to "kill" the Skandia man was taken by the scouting management and the document itself is everything I stand for. And I also have no views on how the memorandum has been interpreted, says Håkan Ström.

For during the first years of the Palme investigation, the interest in Stig Engström, who has now been identified by the prosecutor as a perpetrator, was weak.

- Engström was seen as, and pretended to be, an additional witness to the crime, that is, he was not a central witness.

Håkan Ström says that was why Engström was not suspected.

Had hoped for more

Håkan Ström says that today's message from the investigation did not live up to expectations.

- It was hoped that there would be good evidence that, with strength, told who it was who was the perpetrator. For example, a weapon that could be linked to the crime or any other technical evidence. But unfortunately it was not included.

Håkan Ström says that the Palm investigation has lived with him for all the 34 years it has been going on.

Don't think it's Engström who is guilty

Håkan Ström says he also does not believe that Stig Engström is the perpetrator.

- My personal opinion is in itself irrelevant in this context, but I never believed that and I did not become more convinced after today's press conference either.

He also says that there are many things you could wish for in a different way at the beginning of the investigation.

- There is a lot that would have been done differently, with the facts in hand.

Håkan Ström does not believe that today's message is enough to put the murder of Olof Palme behind him.

- Unfortunately, this will not lead to this, in my opinion. This wound in the Swedish people's soul is still bleeding.
