Despite indications of a recovery in the Swedish economy, the situation is far from what it was before the corona crisis.

- There are signals that the economy in Sweden is about to turn around. But it is important to say that it is from a very low level, says Magdalena Andersson (S).

Unemployment rose in March and April, and is expected to continue to rise, says the finance minister. In April, unemployment reached 8.1 percent in Sweden. This is the highest unemployment figure since 2014.

Young people are among the worst affected and many summer jobs have been lost in the crisis.

"Great uncertainty in the labor market"

- Youth unemployment is rising. Many of those who take the student face a great deal of uncertainty in the labor market, says Magdalena Andersson.

Now it is also clear how big the government's bill has been so far for the sick pay cost and the cost of the waiting allowance.

The sickness cost, for which the state took responsibility as of April 1, landed at SEK 5.3 billion in April.

The government's estimate in advance was that the cost would land at SEK 6.5 billion for both April and May.

- These are costs that would otherwise have fallen on sectors that have been tough anyway, says Magdalena Andersson during the press conference.

Greater cost than estimated

The central government's cost for the waiting day's compensation has so far amounted to just over SEK 1 billion.

- There are more people who have been home than we had estimated. But it is also important to say that we developed the measure because it was important for people to stay at home with the smallest symptoms, to reduce the spread of infection, says Magdalena Andersson.
