Tehran had promised: the death of General Qassem Soleimani, killed by Washington in early January in Baghdad, would not go unpunished. Authorities in the country announced Tuesday (June 9th) that they are preparing to execute an Iranian citizen accused of providing information to the United States and Israel on the general's movements, which led to his assassination in January .

Mahmoud Moussavi Majd was found guilty of spying on the Iranian armed forces, "in particular the Quds Force" and of providing the CIA and Mossad with information on "his whereabouts and whereabouts (his leader) the martyred general Qassem Soleimani, "Judicial Authority spokesman Gholamhossein Esmaïli said during a televised press conference.

He is accused of having received large sums of money for his collaboration with these two intelligence services of Iran's enemy countries

His death sentence has been confirmed by the Supreme Court and "will be implemented soon," added Gholamhossein Esmaïli, without giving further details.

A blast in the Middle East, the death of General Soleimani had rekindled already strong tensions between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran. Tehran launched several retaliatory strikes in the process. In one of them, a Ukrainian Boeing was mistakenly targeted and its 176 passengers and crew members were killed.
