SVT's survey of some political parties in Östhammar shows that neither the Social Democrats nor the Center Party intend to cast their votes for a referendum on the final repository in Östhammar.

"You never know how it will go, but we will not propose a referendum," says Jacob Spangenberg (C), chairman of the municipal board in Östhammar.

Neither does the Moderates support a referendum.

"The issue of complicated"

- We have said no to the referendum all the time. The question is far too complicated and requires that you have followed the question for a very long time, says Anna-Lena Söderblom (M).

The environmental party obviously thinks the issue should be tried and the Swedish Democrats advocate a referendum.

- We are positive to the final repository that the final repository will be in Östhammar, but still think that the people will have to say their own, says Martin Vadsten (SD) group leader.

In the past, the Christian Democrats and Liberals have said no, while the local party BOA has said yes to a referendum on final repositories in Östhammar.

The Ministry of the Environment handles the application

It is Svensk Nuclear Fuel Management AB (SKB), which has applied for final disposal of spent nuclear fuel and nuclear waste in Forsmark. They want to store nuclear waste that is expected to be radioactive for 100,000 years in copper canisters 500 meters down the mountain. The application is handled by the Ministry of the Environment, and is tested against both the Environmental Code and the Nuclear Technology Act.
