Bonnie Pointer, one of the four founding sisters of the American pop and rhythm and blues group Pointer Sisters, died at the age of 69, said the training on its website.

The four sisters - Bonnie, Anita, Ruth and June - started singing in their father's church in Oakland, California, before coming to fame in the 1970s.

Among their successes were hits such as "I'm So Excited" and "Jump (For My Love)".

The quartet won their first Grammy Awards (musical award) for the song "Fairytale" in 1975.

The song, co-written by Bonnie and Anita, won the award for best country duet and was later recorded by Elvis Presley.

Bonnie Pointer left the group in the mid-70s to embark on a solo career and had their greatest success in 1978 with the hit "Heaven Must Have Sent You".

"Our family is devastated" by the disappearance of Bonnie, Anita Pointer told CNN.
