The multiplication of demonstrations against racism and police violence in France have forced Emmanuel Macron to step up. The French president asked his government to "speed up" in its proposals to improve the ethics of the police, said the Elysee on Monday 8 June.

According to the presidency, Emmanuel Macron met in particular on this subject on Sunday with Prime Minister Édouard Philippe and the Minister of the Interior Christophe Castaner, while the shock wave caused by the death of George Floyd in the United States has continued to spread on Saturday in France, where more than 23,000 demonstrators, according to the Ministry of the Interior, denounced the police violence and demanded "justice for all".

The President of the Republic ordered the head of government and the members of the government concerned to take up the various aspects of the subject, police ethics but also city policy and racism. He also asked the Keeper of the Seals Nicole Belloubet to look into the case of the death in 2016 of Adama Traoré, a young 24-year-old black man, during an arrest.

Christophe Castaner summoned to take stock of the slippages online

The Head of State asked Christophe Castaner to take stock of the issues of police ethics and to carry out the work he had asked the government for in January to "improve the ethics" of the police , following the "yellow vests" crisis and the demonstrations against the pension reform.

According to those around him, the President of the Republic also asked Christophe Castaner "to take stock of the measures envisaged after the WhatsApp loop affair" and racist comments made by the police on social networks.

"The President of the Republic hoped that we can speed up on these things to give the police the watchwords it takes so that what can sometimes appear to be slippage does not happen," confirmed on CNews the Minister responsible for relations with the Parliament Marc Fesneau.

Seized by Christophe Castaner, the Paris prosecutor's office had opened on Friday an investigation into racist messages published on a Facebook group and attributed to the police.

Expected proposals on police ethics

"In the context of emotion aroused by the death of George Floyd in the United States, part of the national community protests against racism and questions the action of the police. We want to respond to this anger by transparency and through action, "said Matignon.

Édouard Philippe and Christophe Castaner took stock together on Sunday "on the work undertaken for several months by the Ministry of the Interior on the technical and ethical framework for the intervention of the police". "This work will be the subject of a communication from the minister at the start of this week," said the same source.

"The Prime Minister will also have the opportunity to present the action of the government in the priority neighborhoods, which justify the approach of summer a solidarity effort", she added, while a trip to 'Edouard Philippe in one of these districts is under study.
