Carole Gandon, candidate La République en Marche in municipal elections in Rennes, here on June 8, 2020. - C. Allain / 20 Minutes

Everywhere in France, all over the world. Numerous rallies were held on Saturday to support George Floyd, an African American who was killed during a police checkup on May 25 in Minneapolis, United States. In Rennes, around a thousand people marched through the streets against racism behind slogans calling for an end to "police violence". In the ranks of the demonstration, the family of Babacar Gueye, a man killed during an intervention of the anti-crime brigade in Rennes in 2015.

Banned by the prefecture due to the health crisis, the rally had received support from the Choose Ecology for Rennes list, led by Matthieu Theurier and which has just merged with outgoing mayor Nathalie Appéré for the second round of the municipal elections . Support that is not to the liking of their opponent Carole Gandon. After writing a column this weekend, the candidate of La République en Marche again attacked environmentalists this Monday morning during a meeting with the press. "I regret the Manichean posture of the elected and EELV candidates who supported without nuance the banned demonstration on Saturday," she said in a text read in front of the journalists.

"Bringing the rhetoric of state racism"

In her position, the candidate attacks several members of the environmental list, accusing them of "carrying the rhetoric of state racism" and of adhering to the theses of "white privilege" and criticizing the position by Priscillia Zamord on "decolonial ecology". But it is above all the outgoing mayor that Carole Gandon addresses. "Madame Appéré has never dissociated herself from these words, which come under the rhetoric carried by the party of the Indigenous people of the Republic", attacks the partner of deputy Florian Bachelier. “Racism exists in France, including among certain police officers, and it must be combated by all means. But the vast majority of national and municipal police officers do their job with dignity, courage and selflessness, ”said the candidate.

In a text published on Saturday, the environmental list had given its support to the demonstration organized on Saturday and in particular "to all the victims of this discrimination and this violence". The group led by Matthieu Theurier concluded: "It is finally time that in France, it is possible to have a real peaceful debate on these subjects and to find solutions so that equality between all the citizens is effective".
