The Afghan Taliban said that the head of its political office, Abdul Ghani Brader, met in the Qatari capital, Doha, the American envoy to Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad, and an American military official to discuss several issues, most notably the acceleration of the release of prisoners and the start of Afghan negotiations.

A spokesman for the Taliban political office, Suhail Shaheen, explained in a tweet that the commander of foreign forces in Afghanistan, American General Scott Miller, participated in the meeting between Brader and Khalilzad, as was Mutlaq Al-Qahtani, the special envoy of the Qatari foreign minister.

And according to a Taliban spokesman, the meeting discussed issues related to the talks between the Afghan parties.

The US envoy to Afghanistan had said in press statements earlier this month that the Afghan government had released between 2,400 and 2,500 Taliban prisoners since the agreement, and the movement in turn released more than four hundred prisoners from the Afghan government forces.

A Taliban delegation in the capital, Kabul, began in early April last year talks with the Afghan government on the exchange of prisoners, for the first time since an international coalition led by Washington overthrew the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2001.

In February 29, the Taliban and the United States signed an agreement, describing historical terms, that paves the way according to a timetable for the gradual withdrawal of American forces from Afghanistan, in exchange for security guarantees from the movement not to allow targeting American interests and the interests of its allies from Afghan soil.

The Doha agreement provides for the release of about five thousand Taliban prisoners, compared to about a thousand from the Afghan government.
