The clear cuts decided by BP will affect no less than 15% of its employees by the end of the year. Of these 10,000 job cuts, 2,000 are based in the United Kingdom and are mainly office jobs, mainly for executives.

Group chief executive Bernard Looney, who took office in February, already announced last month a one-third reduction in the management team and a salary freeze until the end of the year for those who keep their jobs.

The oil giant also announced in April a 25% drop in spending this year due to the collapse in demand for oil caused by containment measures decided around the world to stem the spread of the coronavirus.

But beyond this conjuncture, Bernard Looney intends to “reinvent” BP in order to successfully reorient the British company created 111 years ago towards renewable energies. One of its objectives is to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2050.
