The Assize Court of minors of the Hérault judges from Monday a man accused of having attacked seven young women between 2015 and 2016 in Montpellier. Five of them managed to escape, but two were raped. The man accused of aggravated rape and attempts was a minor at the material time (he was 17 years old) and will be tried behind closed doors.

The first attempted rape took place in December 2015. A man got into the passenger compartment of a young woman's car. Under the threat of a knife, he forced her to drive him into downtown Montpellier, telling him that he was going to rape her. The young woman had managed to escape from him.

The procedure was the same for the other six victims. One of them had been followed and raped in the parking lot of her residence, a second on a vacant lot. Another victim was saved by the intervention of a homeless man who managed to make his attacker flee.

It was the seventh victim who had made it possible to give a decisive advance to the investigation, in July 2016. This jogger had struggled forcing her attacker to flee. But on the spot, he had forgotten a bag containing personal belongings. The contents of this bag and the DNA had helped trace the trail of the accused who appeared this Monday before the Assize Court. Incarcerated since, he faces up to 15 years in prison.
