Seun Adekunle, 17, is suspected of making her mother believe she was kidnapped for ransom. She was arrested by police with her boyfriend in southwestern Nigeria.

She is accused of having staged her abduction, with her boyfriend, to demand a ransom from her mother: a 17-year-old girl was arrested in Abeokuta, in southwestern Nigeria.

Kidnappings that are increasing in recent years

Seun Adekunle disappeared on June 1 from the family home. Two days later, someone called his mother demanding 500,000 naira (about 1,140 euros) for his release, Nigerian police said on Sunday. "The two lovers were arrested on Thursday in the hideout where they were hiding," police spokesman Abimbola Oyeyemi told AFP.

Kidnappings for ransom, which appeared in the early 2000s in the oil south-east of the country, have been increasing in recent years, especially in northern Nigeria.
