Senegal: Hissène Habré returns to prison

The former Chadian dictator was escorted Sunday evening around 6 p.m. local time to the Cap Manuel prison where he is serving a life sentence, notably for crimes against humanity. On April 6, he was authorized, for health reasons, facing Covid-19, to leave prison for a period of 60 days. A time he spent under prison supervision between the homes of his two wives in Dakar. An authorization which expired this Saturday 6 June.

The information was confirmed on Saturday evening by the Senegalese Keeper of the Seals. On the air of a local radio, Malick Sall announced that the Hissène Habré case was under investigation before the sentencing judge and that the former Chadian dictator should return to prison this Sunday, June 7.
Neither his lawyers nor his entourage wished to respond to our requests, but a press release published this Sunday by Hissène Habré's wife, Fatime Raymonne Habré, denounces, " risks even more serious for his health than at the beginning permission ”, at a time when Senegal has more than 4,000 cases of Covid-19 .
According to the press release still, the judge refused their request for renewal of the permission, considering that Hissène Habré should reinstate the prison and wait a month before making another request.
For his part, Reed Brody, lawyer for the NGO Human Rights Watch (HRW) and defender of the victims of Hissène Habréensures that according to the information at his disposal, the conditions of Hissène Habré's imprisonment do not pose a health problem, the latter being imprisoned alone in a special pavilion of the prison.
