The American television channel Fox News has apologized for having released a graph linking stock market increases to racist violence against black men, including the assassination of Martin Luther King on April 4, 1968 or the death of George Floyd at the hands of a white policeman on May 25.

This graph, shown Friday on the conservative channel as part of the program "Special Report with Bret Baier", identifies the increases that occurred after these two events as well as after the acquittal in 1992 of four white police officers who had shot in 1991 a black motorist, Rodney King, and the death in 2014 of a 17-year-old black boy, Michael Brown, killed by a white police officer.

A "slight" lack of context

Other media, including Fortune Magazine , noted that the financial markets tend to rebound after periods of social unrest.

"The infographic used in Special Report on Fox News to illustrate the reactions of markets to historic moments of social unrest should never have been broadcast on television without complete context," cable television said on Saturday. "We apologize for the insensitivity of the image and take the matter seriously," she added in a retweeted press release without comments by Bret Baier.

The graphic has sparked outrage as mass protests take place across the country to protest racism and police violence after the death of George Floyd.
