When the permafrost thaws at an ever-increasing pace, the soil gives way and the landscapes change. But the effects of the permafrost disappearing can be far worse than a cistern full of oil collapsing, according to Gustaf Hagelius.

- Unfortunately, this is just the tip of the iceberg. What is the big concern, which causes many to be very worried, is that the permafrost contains extremely large amounts of carbon. It releases greenhouse gases when it thaws which can lead to quite significant increases in the greenhouse effect, he says.
