Saturday's demonstrations were the first since the government eased the restrictions imposed by the Corona crisis.

The protesters burned trash cans and ripped stores in the capital Beirut. Among other things, better living conditions were required and that the upcoming parliamentary elections should be made earlier.

Lebanon's Iran- and Hezbollah-backed Prime Minister Hassan Diab has been in power since January, when he took over after the country's previous government, which was forced to step down last fall after major protests.

But Lebanon's economic problems have deepened in recent months and the country's currency has lost half its value while prices have soared and companies, also affected by the corona crisis, have been forced to make major cuts.
