Objective achieved for the former American vice-president. Joe Biden officially won the Democratic nomination Friday, June 5, setting the stage for competing against outgoing President Donald Trump in the November presidential election.

A candidate needs 1,991 delegates to secure a nomination. Biden reached that number on Friday after seven states and the District of Columbia held their primaries earlier in the week.

“A united party”

Joe Biden was the only candidate remaining for the nomination after his main rival, Bernie Sanders, gave up running for office in April.

"It was an honor to compete against a group of the most talented candidates from the Democratic Party and I am proud to say that we are moving towards this presidential election as a united party," Biden said in a statement.

"I’m going to spend each of the days between November 3 and me fighting to win the vote of the Americans all around this great country so that, together, we win the battle for the soul of this nation, and so that we let's make sure that we rebuild our economy without forgetting anyone, "he added.
