India has overtaken Italy, as the sixth largest country affected by the Corona virus in the world, with the highest daily increase in infections so far, data showed Saturday.

The Indian Ministry of Health registered 9887 new cases during the past 24 hours, which brings the total number of cases to 236657.

Since Friday, at least 294 deaths from the virus have been recorded, bringing the total to 6,642 deaths.

The figures showed that India jumped to sixth place in the list of countries most affected by the epidemic, surpassing Italy, which had a total of 23,531 cases by Friday evening, according to a statistic from Johns Hopkins University in the United States.

However, the death rate in India is relatively low, compared to countries most affected by the epidemic, including Italy.

According to data from the Ministry of Health, the number of people recovered reached more than 114,000. India still has more than 115,000 active cases across the country.

Many new cases were registered in rural areas after hundreds of thousands of migrant workers left daily wages for cities and towns, subject to closure to return to their villages, where they found themselves without work during the epidemic, and the authorities began allowing their movement outside the cities in early May, which led to Chaotic and crowded scenes at border checkpoints, and the Indian government eased the closure, which started on March 25, over the past weeks in an attempt to revive the economy.
