Al-Qaeda leader of the Islamic Maghreb (AQMI), Algerian Abdelmalek Droukdal, was killed by French forces in northern Mali, near the Algerian border, Army Minister Florence Parly said on Twitter on Friday , confirming information obtained by AFP.
This historic Islamist head in the Maghreb, commander of several Sahel jihadist groups , was killed Thursday in the north-west of the Malian city of Tessalit, AFP learned.
"Several of his close collaborators" were also "neutralized," according to the minister.
"Abdelmalek Droukdal, a member of Al Qaeda's steering committee, commanded all the troops of the North African terror organization and the Sahelian strip, including the JNIM, one of the main terrorist groups active in Sahel," according to Parly.
The head of AQMI received the support of several jihadist groups active in Sahel, gathered since 2017 in the Group of support for Islam and Muslims (GSIM), led by the Malian Tuareg Iyad Ag Ghaly.
