  • In Brittany, many large cities have not yet appointed their mayor with the exception of Vannes.
  • In Brest, the socialist François Cuillandre has a good chance of stacking up after his alliance with the Greens.
  • In Lorient and Quimper on the other hand, the ballot looks very tight.

If the games are already made in Vannes, Carhaix, Vitré or even in Paimpol, most of the big Breton cities have not yet appointed their mayor. This is particularly the case in Rennes where the suspense promises to be quite limited since the announcement of the merger of the lists of Nathalie Appéré and Matthieu Theurier. Also in Brest, the outgoing socialist mayor François Cuillandre is a big favorite, as is the deputy LR Gilles Lurton in Saint-Malo. But the election promises to be more indecisive elsewhere in the region such as Lorient or Quimper. Less than a month away from the second round, 20 Minutes takes stock of the challenges facing municipalities in Brittany.

After its merger with the Greens, Cuillandre is a big favorite in Brest

As in Rennes or Nantes, the left sealed its alliance in Brest for the second round of the municipal elections. After long negotiations with an environmental candidate Ronan Pichon, who came in third in the first round with 15.74% of the vote, the socialist François Cuillandre has a good chance of winning again for a fourth term. Despite his legal troubles, the outgoing mayor had turned first on March 15 in the city of Ponant by collecting 26.54% of the vote.

The period is decisive for the future of our territory and demands that we show responsibility.

Opposite, his main opponent Bernadette Malgorn did not wait for the announcement of the date of the second round to resume his campaign. But the candidate from the right and from the center leaves from afar. With 18.87% of the votes in the first round, his list received half as many votes as those accumulated by the PS and EELV lists (nearly 13,000 votes). Above all, she will not be able to count on the votes of the walkers, Marc Coatanéa having decided to maintain his candidacy despite his disappointing score in the first round (12.6%).

A quadrangular in Lorient, the stronghold of Jean-Yves Le Drian

The second municipal round promises to be most undecided in Lorient. In this bastion of socialists for more than fifty years, the succession of Norbert Métairie will be played by four. In the first round, the environmental candidate Damien Girard, supported by the Greens, the Socialist Party, the PCF and the UDB, had created a little surprise by turning in the lead with 22.99% of the vote.

His lead is however meager on his pursuers, all qualified in a pocket handkerchief. He is thus only two points behind the candidate from the right and from the center Fabrice Loher, who came in second with 20.82% of the vote. Despite some discussions with Damien Girard, the outgoing majority candidate Bruno Blanchard will also be present in the second round. Its list, on which the outgoing mayor Norbert Métairie was in last position, came in third position with 18.45%.

In this quadrangular, the LREM candidate Laurent Tonnerre closed the march on the evening of the first round. Despite the support of Jean-Yves Le Drian, who was mayor of Lorient for seventeen years, the walker had only collected 17.80% of the vote. But only 654 votes separated him from Damien Girard, who came first. In other words, not much given the record abstention rate of 66.15% recorded in the first round.

In Quimper, the PS wants to take advantage of the differences of the macronists

They both support the policy of Emmanuel Macron. But at the local level, Ludovic Jolivet (Agir) and Annaïg Le Meur (LREM) did not manage to get along. What does not do the business of the outgoing mayor of Quimper, arrived second in the first round with 30.23% of the votes, who counted on an agreement with the walking deputy (3rd with 13.75% of the votes) to keep his chair.

In this upcoming triangle, the socialist Isabelle Assih, who came first on March 15 (32.06% of the votes), could therefore take advantage of the differences between these two adversaries to win the bet. Especially since it has reserves of votes to its left.

A duel on the right in Saint-Malo with a big favorite

He did not go far from being elected in the first round. In Saint-Malo, the game looks pretty easy for Gilles Lurton, who came very much in the lead (47.42%). Except cataclysm, the deputy LR should therefore take over from Claude Renoult in the privateer city.

He will face him the centrist candidate Anne Le Gagne, who was a number 2 time on her list before she decided to go alone. But the departmental councilor started from far away since she only totaled 13.28% of the votes in the first round. Above all, it failed to seal alliances with the other lists and therefore appears to be lonely before the second round.
