The UN Security Council unanimously adopted two resolutions during the night of Wednesday to Thursday. One creates a political mission in Khartoum and the other maintains the mission in Darfur until at least the end of the year, when it was to end in October.

Sudan will ultimately have two missions. In addition to the one deployed in Darfur, a new one will be set up in Khartoum. Called Minuats, it will, among other things, help the government draft a new constitution and organize elections. Votes to be held before the end of the transition in 2022.

The mandate of this new mission, whose initial duration is 12 months, was a point of contention in Khartoum, some fearing an interference by the United Nations in the internal policy of the country.

Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok had to insist on convincing his critics: this mission will not interfere with government policy and will not include men in uniform. The resolution, even if it does not specify the type of mandate, is based on the principle of national sovereignty.

As for the current mission in Darfur , the UNAMID, which was to end in October, it is maintained until the end of the year, but should continue a gradual withdrawal. Even if security in Darfur has improved, notes the Security Council, the situation in some regions remains worrying. The UN says the withdrawal of its troops should depend on the progress of the ongoing peace process.
