Rue Léon-Blum, in the city center of Nantes, pedestrian this summer - J. Urbach / 20 Minutes

  • The city has decided to move all of its streets to zone 30 by the end of June, with the exception of certain major axes.
  • It promises that the facilities for bicycles and pedestrians will intensify.

The measure should enter into force in the coming days or weeks at the latest. In order to give more space to cyclists and pedestrians, the city has decided to pass all of its streets into zone 30, with the exception of certain major axes where public transport in particular circulates. A boost for the municipality whose objective on this subject, before confinement, was to reach 70% of peaceful roads (excluding main roads) by 2027 in the agglomeration.

This temporary decision will be evaluated like the rest of the range of measures that will complement it. If some cycling facilities had been put in place since May 11, the city is ramping up with the adaptation of around thirty routes. The most symbolic will touch the rue de Strasbourg, where the parking spaces should be temporarily removed. Temporary axes and markings are planned route de Vannes or route de Clisson. During the summer, the town hall promises to attack rue d'Allonville or boulevard Gustave-Roch.

Pedestrianized Joffre Street?

Some 700 temporary bicycle supports could grow in the city, and especially along the Cours Saint-Pierre in Nantes. In the meantime, while bike shops are facing high demand, a large repair and entertainment space has just opened under the Naves, and for another week.

Among the other changes announced, the city is working to give more space to pedestrians, and where appropriate to restaurant terraces, in certain streets. Rue Léon-Blum should once again get rid of cars, a scenario is being studied for rue Joffre. Place Graslin and rue Fourré should also be affected by this type of measure.
