The Marine and Water Authority searches for areas by boat for illegal fishing gear used to catch the endangered eel. But since 2016, they have been using drones to find the eel riders - which has produced results.

Larger areas can be searched more easily and the seizures are increasing.

- The fact that we take many seizures is because we become more efficient thanks to tools, but also that we get more experience where we look for the gear, says Tobias Jeppsson, fisheries controller at the Marine and Water Authority.

The poaching continues

Only fishermen with a license are allowed to fish eel - yet the poaching continues in the Baltic Sea. However, the sea and water authorities see that their work in finding and picking up Russian boats yields results.

- We disrupt fishing spots as we seize, says Tobias Jeppsson.
