Angela Merkel denounced on Thursday the "murder" of George Floyd, an African-American killed during a police arrest last week. The German chancellor spoke of "racism", which she believes strikes a "very polarized American society".

"The murder of George Floyd is a terrible thing. Racism is a terrible thing. American society is very polarized, "lamented the Chancellor on the public channel ZDF. “Racism has always existed. And unfortunately, this is also the case here (in Germany), ”she added. She also says she "hopes" that the protests will remain "peaceful" in the United States.

Donald Trump, a "very controversial style" president

The four police officers who arrested George Floyd in Minneapolis are now all being prosecuted and his death has been classified as "murder", as claimed by the hundreds of thousands of Americans who have demonstrated since last week.

Asked about US President Donald Trump, Angela Merkel, in power since 2005, replied that as far as she was concerned, her "demands in politics (were) always to try to bring people together, to reconcile them". "I think the political style (of President Trump) is very controversial," she added.

“I work with all elected presidents around the world. And of course with the American president, ”argued the German leader. "All I can do is hope that we can work together."
