The Argentinian German Burgos, loyal assistant to Diego Simeone at Atletico, will leave the Madrid club at the end of the 2019-20 season to become head coach of a club whose name he has not specified, he announced on Wednesday.

"At the end of this 2019-20 season, I will take my first steps as head coach," said Burgos in a video published by Atletico.

"I believe that after more than ten years in the Spanish Championship, I am fully capable of directing the destinies of a team," continued the former Argentine international.

Former Atletico player, from 2001 to 2004, Burgos, 51, has teamed up with Simeone since 2011 at the head of the Madrid club.

With the "Mono" and "Cholo", their nicknames, on the bench, Atletico has twice reached the final of the Champions League (2014, 2016) and garnered a title of champion of Spain (2014) , a King's Cup (2013), a Spanish Super Cup (2014), two Europa Leagues (2012, 2018) and two European Super Cups (2012, 2018).

It is therefore the end of an era for the "Atleti" where we regularly evoke since the beginning of the season a certain wear of his technical duo.

Atletico is indeed struggling in the league (6th, 13 points behind the leader, FC Barcelona), suspended since March and soon back, but eliminated the defending champion Liverpool in the knockout stages of the Champions League .

"Until my last day (at Atlético), I will try to reach the objectives that we set ourselves (...) I will do everything to win the Champions League, it's a dream that I want to realize, "insisted Burgos.

According to the Spanish sports daily AS, he could be named head of the Argentinian Union of Santa Fe club.
