A Black Lives Matter demonstration is currently being held at Sergel's square in central Stockholm.

The organizers are allowed to hold the manifestation between 18 and 20 on Wednesday evening, but when it is counted as a general gathering, only 50 people may participate, due to the risk of spread.

Nearly a thousand people have gathered at the site, several media reports.

"We have been in contact with the organizers who invited the participants to leave," says Mats Eriksson, press officer at the police.

Trying to dissolve

Participants on site have not followed the organizers' requests. The police are therefore trying to dissolve the demonstration and urge people to leave the area.

- We are working to get people to leave, says Mats Eriksson.

SVT talked to the organizers earlier on Wednesday.

- Our permit applies to 50 people and we have a constant dialogue with the police and try to keep it safe. We have urged everyone to keep their distance, bring mouthguards and hand spirit and try to make the best of the entire corona situation, said Ibbi Chune, one of the organizers, earlier in the day.
