Jim Mattis, the former Defense Secretary of Donald Trump who resigned over his disagreement with the withdrawal of US troops from Syria, accused the president of trying to "divide" the country.
"Throughout my life, Donald Trump has been the first president who does not try to unite Americans, who does not even intend to try," he said in a statement published online Wednesday by The Atlantic magazine .
"On the contrary, he is trying to divide us," added the former Marine general, who until now had avoided commenting directly on the Republican billionaire's mandate.
