The New York Stock Exchange was advancing cautiously soon after the opening on Tuesday, still supported by the prospect of seeing the economy gradually recover, despite protests in the United States.

Around 1:45 p.m. GMT, its flagship index, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, rose 0.28% to 25,547.14 points.

The Nasdaq, with a strong technological coloring, dropped 0.12% to 9,540.16 points after having started in the green.

The S&P 500, which represents the 500 largest companies on Wall Street, gained 0.09% to 3,058.36 points.

Wall Street had already finished in the green on Monday, the gradual lifting of restrictive measures outweighing concerns related to Sino-American tensions and rallies against police brutality in the United States: the Dow Jones had gained 0.36% and Nasdaq 0.66%.

"The US equity market continues to grow and continues to rebound after its downturn in March, as investors are optimistic about the economy's ability to recover as states authorize the resumption of activity ", note analysts at Charles Schwab.

The operators of the Stock Exchange "leave aside for the moment the civil unrest (in the United States) as well as the nagging tensions between the United States and China", they add.

Donald Trump is indeed facing the most serious civil unrest in his mandate as hundreds of thousands of Americans protest against police brutality, racism and social inequality, exacerbated by the Covid-19 crisis. The US president has threatened to deploy the military to end the violence.

But unless these troubles were to persist for several weeks, and consequently affect consumer confidence, several observers believed that they had no particular influence on the stock market.

Investors are more sensitive to the signs of a recovery in activity and in this regard welcomed comments from the credit card manager Visa: if the total amount of payments made with his cards fell by 5% in May to the States -United compared to the previous year, it increased by 13% compared to April.

On the bond market, the 10-year rate on the US debt rose slightly, moving to 0.6608% against 0.6591% Monday evening.
