- Martine Aubry, decided to commit to the second round of municipal elections, on June 28, without the support of the Greens (EELV).
- Since 2001, the mayor (PS) of Lille has ruled the city with the help of environmentalists.
- There will be a triangular with the presence of a macronist candidate, Violette Spillebout.
A calculated strategy or a true battle of honor? The mayor (PS) of Lille, Martine Aubry, decided to commit to the second round of municipal elections, on June 28, without the support of the Greens (EELV), a political force on which she had relied since 2001.
Stéphane Baly, head of list (EELV), deposited his list this Monday morning at 9:15 am, followed at 11:00 by Martine Aubry. 20 Minutes sought to find out how the gap could have widened so much between the socialist and ecological clans.
A meeting without Martine Aubry
The Médiacités information site mentions a date, April 16, to explain the breaking point. According to this site, a press conference, organized by videoconference by EELV to make proposals during the confinement, set fire to the powder. Martine Aubry, not appreciating this lone rider of her former allies, had estimated that she could not "work with people in whom [she did not] trust".
This in-between tower, which lasted three months due to the Covid-19 epidemic, thus heightened tensions that nevertheless existed before. With the recent announcement of the holding of the second round, attempts at rapprochement nevertheless took place. A meeting was also held on Thursday between the two lists. But without Martine Aubry.
A ballot played in advance in the event of an alliance
"After having changed the appointment at the last moment, she did not even come in person, which shows that she did not have a mad desire to go there together", regrets the head of the list (EELV) Stéphane Baly. The team of Martine Aubry rejects, on the contrary, the fault on the ecologists who "did not give any response to the proposals for union".
1) our door was open and you wanted to close it from the first day. We waited in vain ... what lies!
2) what substantive disagreements when you only talked about the posts? We would have liked to have substantive exchanges. https://t.co/zx9fmktbBm
The political calculation seemed obvious, however. Conversely with 29.8% and 24.5% of the votes in the first round, during the poll on March 15, the mayor of Lille and the ecologists were almost certain to keep the belfry in the event of an alliance.
Disagreement over merger arrangements
However, the main scramble related to the terms of the merger. The two lists found no agreement on the distribution of seats. Martine Aubry demanded a “majority bonus” for her top-ranked list, “as has always been the case in Lille,” explains a member of her team. Stéphane Baly wanted to impose “proportional” to “respect the votes of the first round”.
#Lille @MartineAubry, closely followed by @ lilleverte2020, took out the calculating machine. Merging would mean giving almost half of its majority to the Greens.

According to our information, the local quarrel has gone back to the highest levels of the parties. Thus the national secretary of EELV, Julien Bayou intervened with the boss of the PS, Olivier Faure, to find common ground. "I have no power over Martine Aubry," replied the latter.
Allied with the Greens in Lille, the Génération-s movement also tried to play diplomats through the former socialist presidential candidate, Benoît Hamon. But in vain. Because the discomfort is surely deeper than a problem of seats to distribute.
The end of concessions
The historically high score of the Greens ended the era of concessions on certain files. “Usually, we list our fundamental disagreements to move forward and work together. This year, we weren't even able to do it, ”denounces the team of the outgoing mayor.
However, on the side of the Greens, we assure that these points have been addressed. "In 2014, we had effectively voiced our opposition to the Lillenium shopping center project," recalls an ecologist. This time, the Saint-Sauveur neighborhood project or the establishment of a universal income did not find the same compromise.
Results of the municipal elections in Lille
Each camped on its positions and rejecting the fault on the other, so it is a triangular that promises with the macronist candidate Violette Spillebout (17%). And the election, which seemed to play in advance, will therefore carry its share of suspense.
