With Washington DC announcing a new curfew for the second night in a row, between seven in the evening until six in the morning, to reduce the looting and riots that accompanied night protests, condemning the killing of George Floyd of African descent in Minnesota by a white policeman.

Al-Jazeera Net interviewed Officer Moore Johnson, a dark-skinned man, from the Washington DC police force, and with dozens of his colleagues assigned to secure the "Friendship Heights" (northwest of the capital).

In his explanation of what happened to George Floyd, he said, "We cannot understand what an unarmed man was subjected to by a policeman who was supposed to have received training on what to do in various circumstances and all possibilities."

He added that it is not possible to understand what the other policemen did by watching what happened and not interfering to stop the attack on Floyd and stop their police colleague, stressing, "I cannot imagine what happened in their minds during these minutes."

On some charges of straining the relationship between white policemen and their black counterparts, Moore said it is not possible to generalize, but there are "some racist corrupt elements, but the majority are doing heroic actions to provide security and safety for Americans." He stressed that there is no distinction between officers and policemen on the basis of color, religion or any other classification.

On the feelings and motives of the protesters, Moore stressed his understanding of the widespread anger, especially among black Americans and others, and their right to demonstrate in peaceful ways.

He added, "As a black policeman, I do not see any justification for violence, looting or breaking shop fronts, as is the case in this region of Washington."

"Most of the protesters - who are not only black - seek only to express their anger and raise their voices to achieve justice towards Floyd's killers, but I do not understand how acts of robbery and violence can result in something positive."

He pointed out that no one can predict when these protests will end, but there are circumstances that can help defuse the anger of the protesters, including steps to arrest the rest of the police in Minneapolis who witnessed the killing without interfering to prevent it.

He considered that politicians must play their part in addressing the dilemma of the relationship of some white policemen with men and black youth.

He said that in Washington, the police are distinguished by a wide diversity of their officers. There are blacks, whites, Hispanics, Asians, and others, but it is rare in some police departments in other states to find black or other minority officers, stressing the need to focus on serious training programs, which define the police as the diversity of society And the rights of citizens.

The upscale Friendshipb Heights, where policeman Moore works, was looted and broken by shop windows last Sunday night, and police numbers doubled yesterday night, and the night passed quietly compared to the previous night.

As of the preparation of this report, the three police officers who had not interfered despite hearing Floyd’s distress were not arrested, they were satisfied with their suspension from work immediately after the accident, and police officer Derek Chauven was charged with a third degree murder.
