  • In Marseille, the left has managed to unite in six of the eight sectors.
  • However, no agreement could be reached between Samia Ghali and Printemps Marseille in the northern districts.
  • Two lists on the left withdrew to block Stéphane Ravier.

The suspense will have been tenacious until the end, at the end of the curtain, at 6 p.m. This Tuesday marked the deadline for submitting a list of candidates for the second round of the Marseille municipal elections. After bitter negotiations and endless negotiations, the prefecture of Bouches-du-Rhône was, on Tuesday, the time of a somewhat special day, the theater of a strange ballet of pretenders to the throne occupied by Jean- Claude Gaudin for a quarter of a century. Some came with a new partner to try to build a winning duo by June 28. Others have decided to go it alone, even if it means playing spoilsports. 20 Minutes takes stock of the alliances and disagreements that shaped the contours of the second round.

The left united in six of the eight sectors

First opposed to being part of the left-wing coalition, known as the Marseilles Spring, which came first in the first round, EELV has finally joined this movement in six of the eight sectors of the city. For these new friends, the watchword in front of the gates of the prefecture is the same: this union of the left, given birth after long negotiations, allows to end the "Gaudin system" and to embody, as Benoît says. Payan, spokesperson for Printemps Marseille, "opposition to Martine Vassal" "This is not a betrayal of our voters," said himself before the prefecture Hervé Menchon, former head of the EELV list in the 11th and 12th arrondissements, as if he were already anticipating criticism…

No agreement between Printemps and Samia Ghali

This union, however, cannot hide the deep disagreements that cross the left forces, especially in the northern districts. Despite discussions until the last minute to reach an agreement in the 15th and 16th arrondissement, the communist Jean-Marc Coppola, head of the Printemps Marseillais list, came alone to file a list. No alliance was finally established with Senator DVG of this sector Samia Ghali, leading in the first round and who had obtained the support of EELV in these districts in order to block the RN, in second position.

In a press release, Samia Ghali said "regret the political irresponsibility and the unconsciousness of the list led by Jean-Marc Coppola" which "makes the inhabitants of 15-16 take the risk of seeing the extreme right arrive at the town hall of sector ”. In front of the prefecture, wearing his glasses, Jean-Marc Coppola discovers on the phone of a fellow journalist the press release of the one who will therefore be one of his political adversaries. "We were the ones who reached out to him," he plagues. And to add: “We did not succeed in gathering. It is a pity but there is no danger in the residence ”. "We would have liked the largest possible rally to beat the National Rally," sighs Sébastien Barles, leader EELV. But some did not want to ally, and we are not for forced marriage either! "

Towards a duel of the rights in 13-14

The situation is different in the neighboring sector, however. To block the senator RN Stéphane Ravier, the two candidates on the left who could maintain themselves, Jérémy Bacchi on the one hand for Printemps Marseillais and Julien Rossi for Samia Ghali, decided to withdraw their candidacies. "It is for me unconscious and amoral to be only candidate to make lose", justifies Julien Rossi on Twitter. To try to keep the town hall of this sector, in the purse of the National Rally since 2014, Stéphane Ravier will have to face the candidate LR David Galtier, who came in second position in the first round with 18.21% of the votes.

The divided right

Extremely rare in the political history of Marseilles, the voters of several sectors will have to choose between four candidates. The fault in particular to the deep divide between the candidate LR Martine Vassal and her best enemy, the dissident Bruno Gilles. Thus, in the 2nd and 3rd arrondissements, facing Benoît Payan, the outgoing mayor and candidate of Bruno Gilles Lisette Narducci joined forces with LREM to face the official LR candidate, Solange Biaggi. All alongside Jeanne Marti of the National Rally. Same scenario for the 11th and 12th arrondissements. In this sector, to keep his mandate, the outgoing LR mayor Julien Ravier will have to beat the candidate RN Franck Allisio, the union of the left but also Robert Assante, who represents in these districts Bruno Gilles.

In the lands of Jean-Claude Gaudin, Martine Vassal found herself in difficulty, with a candidate from the Marseille Spring, Olivia Fortin, who came first in the first round. The LR president of the metropolis had however managed to convince Ludovic Perney, the head of the list of senator DVD Bruno Gilles, to join him. The respite was short-lived. Martine Vassal will indeed have to face the head of the LREM list Yvon Berland, who, from the top of his 12.25%, has decided to refuse all alliance proposals to go it alone.
