NU healthcare consists of three hospitals and includes Bohuslän and Dalsland, among others. During the summer months, the hospital's catchment area usually grows by 100,000 people, to 400,000.

- The month of July is when we have the highest inflow to our emergency room. In some sense we have it all other summers, but what we also have now are patients who are at risk of spreading infection and sunk in covid-19, says Niklas Claesson.

Appeal: Seek medical care at home

Increasing the spread of infection in the summer would be "very unfortunate," he says.

- It would be very worrying if we get a new peak during the summer months because our employees have been struggling hard all spring and have a need for recovery during the summer.

Therefore, he appeals to visitors to follow the recommendations of the Public Health Authority, and have a plan if you become ill so that you do not burden the health care in the area.

- It is important that you can go home if you get sick, he says.

Öland expects covid patients

Öland, with its 25,000 inhabitants, is also a popular destination. In 2019, the island had 1.4 million guest nights, so booked nights in hotels.

Although the region has been mildly affected by corona pandemic compared to other regions, they expect to care for patients with covid-19 throughout the summer.

- We are used to the fact that there are a lot of tourists in the summertime, and we have good preparedness for that. What is different is the epidemic. This means that we must reserve some resources to take care of covid patients. This applies to both ordinary places and intensive care, says Johan Rosenqvist, director of health in the Kalmar Region.

At present, the burden on healthcare is low. But even here, the worry is a possible peak of coronary-infected patients, which would increase the load.

- On the total we expect that there will be fewer people going to the region this year compared to earlier this year, but we already see that there are many who are at their summer cottages, he says.
