Monday, a man died after having jumped into a quarry in Limont-Fontaine, near Maubeuge, in the North, we learned from the firefighters. Another person was seriously injured.
Rescue services intervened Monday afternoon, around 3.30 p.m., on the private site of the Quarries of the Sambre basin, in Limont-Fontaine. They were requested after a 40-year-old man who jumped into the basin did not reappear on the surface. It was the firefighters' divers who finally pulled the body of the forties, drowned, out of the water.
Other fatal accidents in quarries in the sector
Rescuers also took care of another seriously injured person after a similar jump. The victim was transported to the Maubeuge hospital center, without specifying his life prognosis.
According to the firefighters, 300 people were on the site at the time of their intervention. Although access to the quarry is formally prohibited to the public, it is not uncommon for many people to go there to bathe, especially on hot days. In 2006, 2015 and 2018, fatal accidents had occurred in similar circumstances in other careers in the sector.
