The United Nations considered that the killing by the Israeli police of an unarmed Palestinian youth with special needs, on Saturday in Jerusalem, was a tragedy that should have been avoided, while the Israeli Minister of Defense declared his regret for the incident.

"I extend my sincere condolences to the family of Iyad Al-Hallaq, a defenseless Palestinian who was shot and killed in Jerusalem," Nikolai Mladenov, the United Nations special coordinator for the Middle East peace process, said in a Tweet on Twitter. Mladenov added that the accident "was a tragedy that should have been avoided."

The UN coordinator called on the Israeli authorities to investigate the incident quickly and ensure that it is not allowed to recur.

The official Hebrew "Kan" channel said that Israeli police, "border guards", shot and killed a Palestinian who tried to escape from them, near the door of the tribes, one of the gates of the old city in occupied East Jerusalem, allegedly with a gun.

After the death of al-Hallaq (32 years), it became clear to the Israeli police that he had special needs, and he was not armed, according to the same source.

Hundreds of Palestinians, on Sunday evening, spread the body of Al-Hallaq from Al-Makassed Hospital to his home in central Jerusalem, then to Al-Aqsa Mosque, after receiving it from the Israeli authorities after he was detained for more than 36 hours.

The mourners performed the funeral prayer on the body of the young man in the Al-Aqsa Mosque, chanting during the funeral procession enlargements and chants glorifying the martyr, before his burial in the city cemetery, according to the witnesses.

In the context, the Israeli Broadcasting Corporation (official) stated that the medical autopsy of Hallaq's body showed that he was shot twice in the middle of his body.

For his part, Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz, who is also the "alternative" Prime Minister of Israel under a power-sharing agreement, expressed his "regret" over the killing of Al-Hallaq, saying at a cabinet meeting that "an investigation will be carried out into an accident quickly killing him."
