India expels two Pakistani Embassy workers for spying

Two employees of the Pakistani embassy were expelled on Monday June 1 from India, a spokesman for the diplomatic mission told AFP after accusations of spying by New Delhi and denied by Islamabad.

Narendra Modi's government announced Sunday evening that it had arrested two employees of the Pakistani embassy and ordered them to leave India within 24 hours "  for engaging in espionage activities  ". According to the Indian press, the two embassy employees were trying to obtain information on Indian national security in exchange for money.

The two Pakistanis returned to their country Monday morning via the border crossing point of Wagah, in Punjab, in the north of India, announced to Agence France-Presse the spokesman of the Pakistani embassy in India.

Islamabad condemns " baseless " charges 

Islamabad summoned the Indian charge d'affaires to Pakistan to notify him of his "  condemnation  " of this expulsion.

In a statement, the Pakistani foreign ministry said the charges of espionage are "  unfounded  " and said the expulsion of the two employees constitutes a "  clear violation  " of the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations .
