In terms of numbers, more people have died in covid-19 in Sweden compared to the other Nordic countries. Only now are our neighboring countries beginning to lift their restrictions - but if the strategy proves to have been successful it is too early to say, Anders Tegnell says.

- Now we are entering a summer period where this type of disease is spreading much worse. So I think you should wait and see this fall.

"Should make a difference in the long run"

One explanation for the difference in the number of deceased persons is, according to Anders Tegnell, that the pandemic has gone further in Sweden. The state epidemiologist highlights the fact that up to a few percent are infected in neighboring countries - comparing to a bit over 20 percent in the Stockholm area.

- It should make a difference in the long run, it does with all other diseases.

Another explanation can be found in where the pandemic started in Sweden, according to Anders Tegnell.

- We had an extremely large number of people who came here from the rest of the world because the Stockholmers happened to be on sports holidays just when we had the most spread out in Europe.

"They are very hard to save"

In terms of the number of infected people, no more people have died in Sweden compared to other countries, says Anders Tegnell, rather the opposite - and highlights how well Swedish health care has taken care of those who have become ill. But one clear reason for Sweden's high death toll is, says Tegnell, the spread of infection in elderly housing.

- It is precisely when the disease affects very old, multi-sick people, then you have a very high proportion who die, you have it in all countries when it comes in there.

The Public Health Authority has planned to come up with new advice and recommendations for the summer next week. But already, Anders Tegnell has a clear message: Don't forget that the pandemic is still ongoing.

- If you go on vacations and such, think about how you can do it without meeting a lot of people that you do not usually meet, especially close for a long period of time.
