On July 1, 2019, the new Tobacco Act was introduced in Sweden. The Västerbotten region was one step ahead and introduced smoke-free outdoor environments as early as May. Since then, it is prohibited to smoke, for example, at hospital entrances in the county.

- This applies to our operations, including at health centers and public dental care, says Ywonne Wiklund, who is a health developer.

The new Tobacco Act says that all entrances to public environments should be smoke-free, just like outdoor seating and playgrounds, among other things (see fact box). But even though nine out of ten people are familiar with the new law, according to a Novus survey, not everyone is following it. At least not according to Ywonne Wiklund.

- I think we will need to remind you of what will happen for a long time to come, says Ywonne Wiklund.
