2019 Chinese middle school students tobacco survey results released

  Today (May 31) is the 33rd World No Tobacco Day, with the theme "Protect young people from traditional tobacco products and e-cigarettes". The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention released the results of the tobacco survey for Chinese middle school students in 2019.

  A total of 288,192 students from 1024 junior high schools and 974 high schools (including 277 vocational schools) were surveyed in 347 counties (cities and districts) in 31 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) in the country. The results show that the cigarette use rate of junior high school students has dropped significantly, and the e-cigarette use rate has risen significantly. The tobacco control work in vocational schools deserves attention.

  The results show that in the past five years, the proportion of junior high school students in my country who tried to smoke cigarettes and now smoke cigarettes has dropped significantly. At the beginning of 2019, the proportion of middle school students who tried to smoke cigarettes was 12.9%, and now the proportion of smoking cigarettes is 3.9%, which is a decrease of 5% and 2% compared with 2014.

  It is worth noting that in the past five years, the proportion of junior high school students in my country who have heard of e-cigarettes and now use e-cigarettes has increased significantly. At the beginning of 2019, the proportion of middle school students who had heard of e-cigarettes was 69.9%. Now the e-cigarette usage rate is 2.7%, which is an increase of 24.9% and 1.5% compared with 2014.

The smoking rate of high school students is much higher than that of junior high school students

  For the first time this year, the smoking situation of high school students nationwide was included in the tobacco survey of middle school students. It was found that the smoking rate of high school students is much higher than that of junior high school students. In 2019, the proportion of high school students who tried to smoke cigarettes, now smoke cigarettes, and now use e-cigarettes was 24.5%, 8.6%, and 3.0%, which were higher than those of junior high school students. Among them, vocational school students are higher than ordinary high school students, 30.3%, 14.7% and 4.5%, respectively, and vocational school boys are up to 43.2%, 23.3% and 7.1%.

Middle school students' exposure to second-hand smoke has improved but is still more serious

  Compared with 2014, the proportion of people who saw smoking at home, indoor public places, outdoor public places, or public transportation in the past 7 days of early middle school students in 2019 has decreased significantly. %; In the past 30 days, the proportion of people who saw smoking on campus and the proportion of teachers who saw smoking almost every day in the school were 45.2% and 8.5%, respectively, a decrease from 2014. The proportion of ordinary high school and vocational school students who saw smoking in the above four types of places was higher than that of junior high school students, which were 72.0% and 67.3% respectively; the proportion of people who saw smoking on campus in the past 30 days was 57.3% and 58.6 respectively %, The proportion of teachers who saw smoking in schools almost every day was 13.0% and 9.4%, respectively.

Middle school students' awareness of smoking addiction needs to be further improved

  The proportion of junior high school students who have learned the specific health hazards caused by tobacco use in the classroom in the past 12 months is 58.6%, which is an increase from 2014. The proportion of specific high school and vocational school students who have learned the specific health hazards caused by tobacco use in the classroom in the past 12 months is 51.3% and 60.0%, respectively. The proportion of students in junior high schools, ordinary high schools and vocational schools in my country who think that it is difficult to quit after starting smoking is only 35.0%, 25.6% and 26.2%.

Factors affecting middle school students' smoking are still widespread

  The survey also found that the factors that affect smoking among middle school students are still widespread. First, the law of not selling cigarettes to minors has not been effectively implemented. There was no percentage rejected because of age when buying cigarettes last time. Students in junior high schools, ordinary high schools and vocational schools were up to 76.5%, 87.6% and 87.6% respectively. The second is that cigarettes are becoming more and more "cheap". The proportion of junior high school students, ordinary high school students and vocational school students who bought the last 20 cigarettes for more than 10 yuan was 70.6%, 85.3% and 77.0% respectively, and the average price was higher than that of adults. At the same time, 7.3% of junior high school students, 2.8% of ordinary high school students and 2.3% of vocational school students reported that the price of cigarettes they bought was 5 yuan or less, and some even less than 3 yuan. Third, tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship activities still exist widely.
