  • Nathalie Appéré's left union list will merge with the environmental list led by Matthieu Theurier for the second round of municipal elections in Rennes.
  • In 2014, tough negotiations had taken place between the two camps before the second ballot.
  • Six years of power sharing have visibly eased tensions. The negotiations were obviously much more peaceful.

"We slept well, good twelve-hour nights. »Matthieu Theurier has a sincere smile. The environmental candidate in the municipal elections in Rennes remembers perfectly the tough negotiations that his list had conducted in 2014 for the merger with Nathalie Appéré. Whole nights to discuss, hours of delicate negotiations to achieve a common project. The six years of sharing power have obviously appeased everyone.

Arriving at the head on the evening of the first round, the two lists on the left negotiated to lead to a fusion of their movement. On Saturday, the two heads of list announced their new union, six years after their first marriage. “Everyone has evolved, got closer. We have six years of common work behind us and shared values ”, assures Nathalie Appéré.

Divergences? "They haven't disappeared in forty-eight hours"

The outgoing mayor did not hide his satisfaction at seeing the union of the left succeed. “We chatted with great serenity. There were no doors slamming, ”said the head of the list, who came first with 32% of the vote in the first round of the municipal elections. Nothing to do with discussions in 2014, where the unexpected score of Matthieu Theurier (15%) had forced the successor of Daniel Delaveau to a forced marriage. “Our political foundations are converging. The proof, we do not take the three days that we have left (until the filing of the lists Tuesday June 2). We did not want to argue for a comma on a program. We are ready, the Rennes are waiting for us, ”says Matthieu Theurier, credited with 25% of the votes on the evening of March 15. This time, the negotiations took place in a small committee, epidemic requires, and without bloodshed.

The two running mate have however mentioned their "points of divergence". “We have them and they haven't disappeared in forty-eight hours. But we were able to overcome them, ”promises Nathalie Appéré. The question of town planning and the height of constructions was the subject of long discussions, leading to an agreement which will be unveiled in the coming weeks. As for the endowment of pistols with electric impulse for municipal police wanted by the mayor, it is still not suitable for environmentalists. "But the sovereign power returns to the mayor", decides the elected socialist.

One month before the second round, the road that leads to the mayor's chair seems wide open to Nathalie Appéré, in charge of the Breton capital since 2014. In a city in the hands of the left since 1977, the candidate of the right Charles Compagnon and The candidate of The Republic on the march Carole Gandon will no doubt have a hard time competing on the evening of June 28. In a press release, the latter denounces an alliance which seals "the renewal of an urban model out of breath, unsuited to face future pandemics", criticizing "six years of concreteization and hyperdensification".

Our dossier on municipal 2020

One month before the second round, the question of the distribution of portfolios is already burning lips. Will environmentalists manage to place a green elected official in the strategic position of transport to the metropolis? Not impossible. "Our presence will undoubtedly surprise," slips a member of the list. In 2014, the Greens obtained eight elected members of the municipal council, which has 61. By gaining ten points in six years, they should be much better represented in the event of an election. “The distribution will be proportional. The sharing of responsibilities will also be done according to each person's skills, ”says Mayor Nathalie Appéré, before concluding. "First there is an election to be won".
